Duo Florestan is a Lied duo formed by soprano Alba Valdivieso and pianist Carlos Bujosa. Founded in Barcelona in 2021, the duo focuses on the German Lied and vocal chamber music, with a strong interest in the relationship between music, text, and narrative.

Their work centres on carefully curated programmes built around clear thematic ideas. Each project is conceived as a coherent artistic journey, in which repertoire, poetry and musical dramaturgy are closely intertwined. Tradition and contemporary reflection coexist naturally, allowing the Lied to emerge as a living and communicative art form.

Alongside the German Lied tradition, Duo Florestan’s repertoire also includes French mélodie and Spanish and Catalan art song. The duo has worked with mentors such as Markus Hadulla, Wolfram Rieger, Mitsuko Shirai, Claar ter Horst and Götz Payer, and has performed in Spain and internationally.

In 2025, Duo Florestan was awarded First Prize at the Juventudes Musicales de España Competition and appeared at festivals such as Pòdium Matadepera (Spain), Liedfestival Sindelfingen and the Hidalgo Festival in Munich. The duo has also been selected to take part in Lied the Future, a talent development programme promoted by the Franz Schubert Association, with the support of the Banc Sabadell Foundation and the Ferrer Foundation.

Inner world – Outer world

Inner world – Outer world is conceived as a musical journey between inner experience and outward expression. The programme explores how love, longing and loss are lived both as deeply personal emotions and as shared, external realities shaped by culture and tradition.

From early Romantic introspection in Schubert, through the reflective lyricism of Brahms and the folk-inspired depth of Mahler and Alma Mahler, to the dreamlike and obsessive worlds of Zemlinsky, the programme unfolds as a continuous emotional arc. Spanish art song by Fernando Obradors opens the inner world towards the exterior, where language, rhythm and colour transform private feeling into collective voice.

Selected Programmes

“Arrel” – Myth and Identity explores the Lied as a space of memory, storytelling and cultural belonging. Drawing on folklore, literature and oral tradition, the programme brings together songs in which music becomes a vehicle for narration, imagination and intimate human experience.

German Lied by Schubert, Mahler and Zemlinsky forms the backbone of the programme, revealing different approaches to myth, popular imagery and emotional depth—from lightness and irony to loss and inner darkness. These works are placed in dialogue with Spanish art song in several languages, highlighting how language, territory and collective memory shape musical expression. Arrel proposes a journey between the deeply rooted and the universal.
